Program Director: Maurizio Zollo
Objectives:
The program aims to open new horizons in strategic management by leveraging recent developments in neuro-science research. It combines three different research areas, i.e. strategic decision-making related to sustainability issues, innovation in decision making processes and neurocognitive methodologies and neural studies, to contribute to the development of micro-foundations in strategic management. In addition, the project aims to advance our knowledge on how to make training and education programs more effective in terms of sustainable and innovative outcomes. This is to explain the characteristics of managers and entrepreneurs' activity measuring their mental processes as they make decisions through brain imaging techniques.
Methodologically, the design leverages business simulations (including some more standard techniques in social sciences such as computer simulations, questionnaires, interviews, verbal protocol analysis and archival sources), psychometric tests and brain imaging (fMRI) techniques with three different participant profiles: graduate students, managers and entrepreneurs. To date, 160 individuals of these three different groups participated in the study's two streams: the evaluation of the effectiveness of training programs and decision making capabilities related to innovation and those related to sustainability. Randomized, controlled experiments are applied to assess the effectiveness of different training approaches.
